Understanding Incoterms: FOB, CIF, EXW and DDP Explained for Buyers

Why Incoterms decide more than price

Two suppliers quoting 'USD 5 per unit' are not quoting the same thing if one means EXW and the other means CIF. Incoterms define where cost and risk transfer from seller to buyer — and therefore what you actually pay and what you are responsible for.

EXW — Ex Works

The seller makes the goods available at their premises. You arrange and pay for everything else: loading, inland transport, export clearance, ocean freight, insurance, destination charges. EXW gives maximum control and maximum responsibility — best for experienced importers with logistics partners in India.

FOB — Free On Board

The seller delivers the goods loaded onto the vessel at the named Indian port, handling export clearance. You control and pay for ocean freight, insurance and everything after. FOB is the most common term for international buyers sourcing from India: clear split, competitive freight shopping, manageable risk.

CIF — Cost, Insurance and Freight

The seller pays freight and minimum insurance to your destination port; risk still transfers when goods are loaded in India. CIF is convenient for first-time importers, but compare the seller's freight rate against the market — convenience sometimes carries a hidden margin.

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid

The seller delivers to your door, duties paid. Maximum simplicity, minimum transparency — and the least control over cost and compliance. Useful for small trial orders; rarely the cheapest structure at scale.

Choosing the right term

Match the Incoterm to your logistics capability, not your comfort zone. If you have a freight forwarder, FOB usually wins on cost and control. If you do not, start with CIF on early orders and build capability from there. Whatever you choose, state the Incoterm — with the named port and Incoterms 2020 — explicitly in every quotation request.
