How to Source Products from India: A Practical Guide for International Buyers

How to Source Products from India: A Practical Guide for International Buyers

Start with a specification, not a product name

The single biggest predictor of a successful sourcing outcome is the quality of your brief. 'Stainless steel fasteners' invites a hundred different quotations; 'DIN 933 hex bolts, A2-70 stainless, M8 x 30mm, passivated, 10,000 pieces' invites three comparable ones. Define material, grade, dimensions, standards, finish, packaging and target quantity before you speak to a single supplier.

Map the right manufacturing cluster

Indian manufacturing is regional. Engineering components concentrate around Rajkot, Ludhiana and Coimbatore; ceramics around Morbi; textiles around Tirupur and Surat; spices across Kerala and Gujarat. Starting in the right cluster shortens your search and improves price discovery, because suppliers there compete for your category every day.

Shortlist on evidence, not enthusiasm

Every supplier will say yes. Shortlist on evidence: does their existing product range actually match your specification, can they show business registration and references, do they answer technical questions precisely? A structured shortlist of three to five candidates beats a scattered conversation with twenty.

Collect quotations you can compare

Quotations are only useful when they are structured the same way: same specification, same Incoterm, same quantity break, same payment terms. A price comparison table built on inconsistent quotes is worse than no comparison at all — it creates false confidence.

Verify before you commit

Match verification depth to order risk. For a first order with a new supplier, consider a sample review, a business registration check and, for larger commitments, a third-party inspection. These steps cost a fraction of a failed shipment.
